Former NFL player and Texas Longhorns star Cedric Benson dies in a motorcycle crash


(CNN) — Renowned running back Cedric Benson, who jumped to stardom as a Texas Longhorn”legend,” died Saturday night. He was 36 years old.
Austin authorities said a minivan was hoping to cross a part as it ran right into a motorcycle, CNN affiliate KXAN reported. Both Benson and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Our condolences to the family and friends of former Bears running back Cedric Benson, our 4th overall Draft selection in 2005 and member of the 2006 NFC Champions staff,” the Chicago Bears tweeted Sunday.
Hours before the wreck, Benson submitted a photograph of a bike on Instagram using the caption”My Saturday day,”surrounded by hearts.
Benson rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the four seasons in Texas and will be now the 9th-leading rusher in college football history, together with 5,540 yards.
His 64 career rushing touchdowns are second in school history.
He won the Doak Walker Award, which will be given to the nation’s top running back, once he rushed for 1,834 yards and 19 touchdowns. Benson also made All-American honors.
“Really miserable day with the departure of Longhorn Legend Cedric Benson,” that the University of Texas soccer team tweeted. “All our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and friends and also our neighborhood of lettermen. He’ll be missed.”
His college coach, Mack Brown, called Benson”one of our favorites”
“He was a true soul — one of the roughest players we coached, maybe not the toughest,” Brown told reporters Sunday. “I, together with a great deal of Longhorns, are only crushed.”
Benson played eight years in the NFL.
He rushed for more than 1,000 yards three times while playing three teams, finishing with 6,017 career rushing yards and 32 touchdowns.
“Cedric was a fine football player for us,” Cincinnati Bengals President Mike Brown said. “Our company is deeply influenced by his sudden and tragic death. The Bengals extend our deepest condolences to Cedric’s family”
Former Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson said he’s mourning Benson’s departure.
“Once he bought into our system, he had been like a flower. He simply triumphed,” Anderson explained. “He offered us a component we did not have. We’d complementary guys, however, Cedric gave us a lost component. He had been a man that is good. He was just one of my men and it hurts. Life is too short.”
